The Square Peg checks out….The Minehead Grand Prix!

The weekend of the 22nd June was the Minehead Grand Prix which took place in…well…Minehead. The activities on offer this weekend were family athletics and closed circuit bike racing through the town. The reason we were going here for the weekend was so that the Square Pegs brother Matthew could compete in a bike race with regional champions. Check out what goes on here https://www.mineheadgrandprix.co.uk/

Matthew’s race wasn’t until the Sunday but we decided to travel up on Friday night and make a weekend of it.

Friday Night

Edward absolutely loves a holiday and particularly to a Premier Inn. When we arrived and got out of the car he was beside himself with excitement. We check in and go to our room. Edward jumps straight into his bed and quite frankly, he would stay there all day and night.

The Square Peg in his all time favourite place!

Daddy Square Peg wanted to go and look around Minehead for the evening and find out where Matthews race was going to be. On the way back from our evening trek we stop off in Macdonalds because we know that Edward will eat the fries. Back to the room and Edward was so excited to be able to get into bed and stay there. Everyone had a good night’s sleep as you would expect in a Premier Inn…

Saturday Antics

So we had a chill out Saturday morning taking our time to have enjoy the lovely Premier Inn breakfast. Edward is happy at breakfast and shouts to anyone who will listen that he loves Coco Pops. However, he would only stay seated if we were all round the table, if one of us got up to get some more breakfast he would shout ‘I come with you.’ So he’d follow us round the buffet area shouting ‘Mummy, you want Coco Pops too?’

Do you want Coco Pops?

After breakfast we walked into Minehead to see what was happening. We went to the event HQ tent and met up with our friends from Matthew’s cycling club. Check out their website here http://mdcc.org.uk/

The 3 Kilometre Running Race

I mentioned that there were some family athletics and we found that there was a kids 3 Kilometre race. Matthew’s friend from cycling was going to run so we decided to enter Matthew into the race too. Bless him, he’s never run that far before but he was amazing, he was able to keep up with his friend and he finished 2nd.

Keep on running!
Still running!

The Incident of the Square Peg and the Chocolate Ice Cream

With the weather being lovely we decided to go and have an ice cream….Daddy thought it was a good idea to buy Edward chocolate ice cream….I thought that was a bit risky myself but I kept quiet…Edward ate some of it but soon realised that it had tiny pieces of chocolate in….he responded with his usual extreme reaction of projectile vomiting all over Daddy…..not sure the public could quite believe what they were witnessing….I mean who on earth would barf up Kelly’s of Cornwall chocolate ice cream??!! So, off we trot back to the hotel to dunk Edward in the bath and a change of clothes….

Barf!

Saturday Evening in Minehead

Out we trek again back into Minehead, this time we meet up with some more cycling friends, sit in a bar out in the sunshine and drink Shandy. Around 7 ish we decided to find somewhere to have dinner, again managed to get seats overlooking the cycling circuit. Now it was time for the Under 16’s bike race…..OMG!!!…I could not believe the speed that they were going, literally every lap they were setting a new lap record.

Waiting for some dinner!
Watching in amazement at the speed of the Under 16’s.

After all the excitement of the race, we made our way back to the Premier Inn and went to bed.

Sunday Race Day

First up was Daddy Square Peg’s race, he was happy as he finished the race in one piece and didn’t get lapped. During Daddy’s race I was chasing Edward all over Minehead whilst trying to support Daddy in his race AND get Matthew ready for his race….phew!!

I’ve just been told off for running away….again…
Trying to keep Edward in one place for more than 30 seconds….
Putting Edward on my shoulders might stop him running off but now he wants to style my hair for me…
Daddy Square Peg looking exhausted in his race!

So now it was Matthew’s turn to race. This was the first time that he’d raced against regional champions so it was tough one. Once again he tried really hard as he always does and finished in 7th place.

Some serious warming up going on!
Looking like a pro!
Giving everything in his race!

After an exhausting weekend of racing and chasing Edward around we drove home. All in all it was such a great weekend and if you ever feel the urge to visit Minehead then come for the Grand Prix weekend and have loads of fun.
